Sam Ellenport

Served as Chapter Chair from 1980 - 1984

Sam Ellenport was born in 1943 and was educated at Amherst, Brown University and Oxford. A sometime teacher of history, he bought Harcourt Bindery in 1973 and remained its owner and later president until 2007. Ellenport has been the owner of Chagford Antiquarians, Inc. since 2012. He's an active book collector, lecturer and writer about the history of bookbinding. Among his writings is the The Future of Hand Bookbinding published in 1993 and Reflections of Two Craftsmen: Sam Ellenport and Ron Gordon published in 2013. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Bookbinding Program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston and was Chair of the New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers, helping to formulate the Chapter during the 1970s and the 1980s. And in 2014, he received the Guild of Book Workers Lifetime Achievement Award.

Todd Pattison

Served as Chapter Chair from 2012 - 2016

Todd Pattison is the Conservator for the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Previously, he worked as a book conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center for more than 25 years and was the Collections Conservator at Harvard College Library, supervising a lab treating Harvard’s general collections. He is an active member of the New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers and a Fellow in the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). Todd first became fascinated with the binding of books in the Boy Scouts while completing his Bookbinding Merit Badge. This also led Todd to develop an annual Book Arts Workshop organized with NEGBW for the Girl Scouts of America. He has an undergraduate degree in Art History from Nazareth College and an M.L.S. from the University of Alabama.

Jeff Altepeter

Served as Chapter Chair from 2002 - 2012

Jeff Altepeter has been the head of the Bookbinding Department at North Bennet Street School since 2007 in addition to being a private practice bookbinder specializing in traditional leather bindings, metalworking for bookbinding and edition work. He is a 1999 North Bennet graduate and a 2003 graduate of the American Academy of Bookbinding. Prior to joining NBSS, Jeff worked at Harcourt Bindery and Harvard University's Tozzer Library. He served as Chapter Chair for the New England Chapter from 2002 - 2012.
